From his 75-year relationship with The New York Times to his numerous book and record covers (not to mention his 15 postage stamps), this is the story of one of the most prolific illustrators of the 20th century.

About David
David Leopold has organized museum exhibitions around the country from the first New Deal muralist to the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead. He has spent more than 30 years studying Hirschfeld’s work, the first 13 as Hirschfeld’s Archivist, visiting him in his studio once or twice a week. His book, The Hirschfeld Century: A Portrait of the Artist and His Age , published by Alfred A. Knopf to coincide with a major retrospective that Leopold curated for the New York Historical Society has received universal acclaim. The Washington Post called it an “instant classic,” and Amazon selected it for its “Top Books ” of the year.
